The Diocese covers the area around Homa Bay in the Southern part of the political area of Nyanza Province.
Many members live in a very poor area on the shore of Lake Victoria with up to 75% living below the poverty line. The prevalence of HIV/AIDS is the highest in Kenya and has resulted in an orphan population of 500,000. There is unreliable rainfall, soil erosion and a high death rate in domestic animals; reduced farming activity, hence low food production and famine.
However, Mothers’ Union continues to visit, preach and provide for the needy, both spiritually and materially. In August 2008, 22 churches took part in reforestation projects. Many continue with poultry keeping and ‘tie and dye’ projects.
The Cathedral Mothers’ Union has chairs for hire and a roof catchment water tank. After every hire of chairs and sale of water, members are able to pay their tithes to the church. They look forward in hope, target new members, teach skills, promote new businesses, and hold leadership and training sessions. Above all they seek to share the Gospel of Christ.
